Michael Jackson - analysing an enigma and legend

Ever since Michael Jackson's death on Thursday afternoon, I have been seeing clips of this video on various news broadcasts about Jackson's life. I saw it so many times and the few moments were so captivating that I had to go find it for myself.

It is a clip of the Jackson Five performing on the Ed Sullivan show in 1969 when Michael would have been 11 years old.

To me, it shows what we have really lost with MJ's death. But then again, we seemed to have lost that joyous, smiling, confident little showman from years ago, long before Thursday, June 26, 2009.

For many people of that  generation, that is how they will remember Michael Jackson - as the phenomenal little singer and dancer with the big, bright smile.

That he became a shell of that in his later years, washed out, gaunt-faced, haunted by rumours of dreadful sexual proclivities, is a tragedy.

But that is the enigma of Michael Jackson. It was like the world was not enough. Everything which we saw on his surface in his first 20-odd years that seemed to be true, turned out not to be so.

Despite growing up in a huge, close-knit family with eight siblings all very close in age (his oldest sister Rebbie is only 8 years older than him and he was the 7th of 9 children) he later spoke of a sad and lonely childhood and we are constantly reminded of the imagery of Michael with Ben the rat as his only friend.

    jackson-five-family-photo

Despite being an adorable child and growing into a handsome man, he seemed to find himself so ugly that he basically mutilated his face repeatedly to achieve... who knows?

    MJ youngMJ face ruined

He was very aware of black issues and concerns - he gave millions to the United Negro College Fund and wrote We Are the World to fight hunger in Africa.

Yet, he seemed to dislike his very blackness. The women he dated and married were white and his children definitely seem to be entirely white, raising the likelihood that the surrogate mothers who bore his children for him, were impregnated with a white man's sperm. At his request? Who knows now.

In his later years, he seemed to be trying to retreat into some Peter Pan-esque, asexual being. His light, feathery voice and delicate and almost naive manner seemed at odds with his frenzied, crotch-grabbing performances that were highly sexual. Have you WATCHED Dirty Diana? Especially that part where he makes the shape of a woman's body and then pelts two vicious jucks? It is virile and masculine yet those were not words we would eventually come to associate with Michael Jackson.

He spent his money wildly - at his death he was reputed to be $500 million in debt (or HALF A BILLION DOLLARS) but yet he was an amazingly shrewd businessman in other ways. The same man who indulged in the money-sucking fantasy that was Neverland, bought the hugely valuable Beatles catalog. And he was gritty in doing it. He outbid his own friend and former Beatle Paul McCartney and went through a 10-month bidding battle to get his hands on it. That is not the mark of a softie or someone who is soft-headed about business.

Who can figure out what was in Jackson's mind? Who can figure out how all of these seemingly conflicting elements co-existed in the same person?

One thing is for certain. His influence on pop culture will last.

I have heard many presenters and talking heads this weekend ask if he could have become "relevant again" with his upcoming comeback tour.

It irked me because Michael Jackson has never stopped being relevant. Despite not putting out a popular album in years, he remains a cultural touchstone.

Every time Chris Brown or Usher or Justin Timberlake or Ne-Yo or Ciara just about any urban singer-dancer post-1982 moves, it is with the distinct influence of Jackson.  These are all people who grew up with the influence of Michael Jackson - either directly as 80s babies or indirectly through seeing his videos in MTV marathons or seeing their older siblings or even parents imitate his moves.

    Chris brown michael jackson jackets

When Kanye West makes huge, cinematic videos and orchestral stage performances, he is influenced by the man who spent $800,000 on the Thriller video in 1984. Do you understand how much money that was in 1984? Especially at a time when black artistes were not getting a bligh on MTV? Michael went ahead and made a mini-movie so that MTV could not ignore him - or  us.

When Beyonce and Rihanna rock this season's 'it jacket, the Balmain, it is simply Michael redux. Take a look for yourself.

May the King of Pop finally rest in peace.

The King is dead. Michael Jackson 1958-2009

    What can we say?

The King of Pop is dead.

    michael-jackson

There was so much said about Michael Jackson during his life - good, bad and outrageous.

We really don't think there is anything we can add to all that has been said. We all know the story - the dizzying heights of fame and success, the bizarre depths of trials and surgeries.

So let us just add our own personal feelings. An era has ended. Some may say it ended long ago for Michael but everyone harboured hopes that he would make a comeback and be the phenomenon we had all grown up with.

    michael_jackson

And that is the essence of Michael Jackson. He is the phenomenon we all grew up with. From the late 60s until today, Michael has always been with us, shaping popular culture. His own life seemed to be lonely and deeply unhappy but he brought happiness to billions. Yes, billions.

    Michael-Jackson-Young-2008

Generations grew up with him in different incarnations from the adorable, afro'd child star to the moonwalking, crotch-grabbing Thriller. He touched all our lives.

And that is all that needs to be said.

Chris Brown cops a plea

And so, finally... maybe this whole sorry saga is over.

Chris Brown pleaded guilty a short while ago to one count of felony assault on islandista pop star Rihanna. He will be sentenced to five years of supervised probation and six months of community service.

It was expected that Ri-ri would have testified against Brown today but at the last minute, Brown entered his plea before a preliminary hearing so she didn't have to testify after all.

    Spectacle avoided.

Interestingly enough, the judge is putting some extra space between Ri-ri and her former (?) boyfriend.

    According to the Associated Press:
After Brown left the courtroom, Rihanna entered and was addressed by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Patricia Schnegg, who explained to the Barbados-born singer that she had issued a stay-away order.

Rihanna had not been seeking a stay-away order, but the judge imposed one. The order requires that Brown and Rihanna stay at least 50 yards (46 meters) from each other, except at industry events when the distance is reduced to 10 yards (9 meters).

The judge also told Rihanna it’s not a one-way order and she will be in violation if she gets closer to Brown than the order allows.

Hmmm... y'all see that last line?

CFW pics- woo-hoo!

It's been a few days in coming but photogs have finally cleared out their discs and we have pictures from Caribbean Fashion Week.  Hurr-ay!

The folks at Jamaican party site Socia Lingua have posted the pics from CFW 09 on their Facebook page   and despite the bite of the recession, fabulousness was on display as usual.

Take a look at some of our favourite outfits and moments from CFW below.

    [caption id="attachment_1146" align="aligncenter" width="360" caption="All photo credits: Socia Lingua"]All photo credits: Socia Lingua[/caption]

Sisters Tessanne Chin and Tami Chyn performed and I found their outfits (especially Tessanne's on the left) were so hot, they deserved a place among the fashions of the night.

    Drenna and Luna

I loved this structured black dress from Drenna and Luna. The sparkle of the fabric keeps it from being too severe and the whole combination makes it a dress we could easily envision being our go-to little black dress for years to come. It's got that classic look about it.

A lot of the earlier outfits from D&L were in this same vein - structured and black and white and just as we were thinking they were all minimalist, they popped this poufy, fluffy delight on us right near the end.

    [caption id="attachment_1148" align="aligncenter" width="282" caption="Drenna and Luna"]Drenna and Luna[/caption]

TOO sweet! It looks like a wearable cake - but in a good way.

    [caption id="attachment_1149" align="aligncenter" width="282" caption="3rd Revolt"]3rd Revolt[/caption]

The BIDC's late pulling of funding affected the Barbadian contingent heavily this year but at least two designers - 3rd Revolt and 5th Element, managed to make it up to JA on their own. 3rd Revolt presented a tough, urban and funky look in their collection, which mostly dressed up their 3rd Revolt t-shirts and swimwear in unexpected ways, like the designs above and below.

    [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="282" caption="3rd Revolt"]3rd Revolt[/caption]

Poshe from Jamaica also presented an edgy, urban collection, with leather and chain details and sharp cuts offset but luxurious materials like satin.

    [caption id="attachment_1152" align="aligncenter" width="282" caption="Poshe"]Poshe[/caption]

On a softer note, Shakad, Julan and Kahnami all presented colourful collections that are exactly what we're feeling this summer - beautiful prints and bold colours.

There are a whole lot more pics to be seen over at Socia Lingua so you can head on over there for hundreds of CFW pics.

Islandistas at the CFDA Awards - shades of grey

The CFDA Awards were held earlier this week and two of fashion's favourite islandistas, Zoe Saldana and model Arlenis Sosa were in attendance.

Interestingly enough, they were both wearing dresses in shades of grey, as was one of the only other brown bodies pictured there, the always fabulous Kerry Washington (let me find out she has a Caribbean granny or something! It would be on like boil corn!).

While Zoe was gorgeous in her ethereal, gauzy Calvin Klein collection dress in gun metal grey, we were ... less sure about Arlenis' nipple-baring Emanuel Ungaro outfit - a gauzy long-sleeved blouse with a high-waisted silvery grey skirt. She didn't seem too sure about it either, judging from her awkward stance.

And Kerry was radiant and glamourous as hell in her sparkling doo.ri dress with the low v-cut bodice and full skirt.

    Take a look below.

Sneak peek: exclusive Vashtie Kola interview!

Vashtie and Oscar 1992Islandista and multi-talented artist Vashtie Kola granted us an exclusive interview this week and she has a lot to say!

Look out for the full interview later on this week where she talks about her time at Def Jam, her decision to step out on her own and pursue her own dreams, how she and her best friend Oscar created one of New York City's hottest party phenomenons, 1992 and what is was like growing up Trini in Albany.

Until then, here is a quick clip:
... I grew up with mostly American black kids. There were also some West Indian families- mostly Jamaican or Guyanese but no Trinidadians. So growing up it was kind of me doing a lot of research to understand what it meant to be Trinidadian.

[Trying to explain her Trini heritage growing up] It was a little confusing for them and it was confusing to me as well. I looked Indian but I wasn’t Indian. Trying to explain the culture - you knowI eat curry chicken, my mum is Hindu but my dad is Christian. ...trying to explain all those different elements.  I tried to get away from it when I was younger. When I was a kid I definitely tried to be more American – I didn’t want to be Trinidadian. As I got older and started to understand my culture and my heritage, I grew to appreciate it more.

Islandista on the rise: VV Brown

Islandistas, have you heard of VV Brown?

If you haven't, you probably will soon.

The British-born soul rocker of Jamaican and Puerto Rican parentage has only been on everyone's Hot List for 09.

    Seriously.

The Guardian, the Daily Mail, the LA Times, the Independent and BBC all placed her on their lists of ones to watch in 2009.

Her musical style is a bit vintage, like that of other female stars of this new Brit invasion such as Amy Winehouse, Duffy and Adele.

    [caption id="attachment_1114" align="aligncenter" width="327" caption="photo credit: Ben Yacobi"]photo credit: Ben Yacobi[/caption]

However, unlike them, VV draws more on  more up-tempo, 50s and 60s era doo-wop and rock, as heard in her breakout hit Crying Blood which is easily the most cheerful sounding song about a heart-wrenching break up that we have ever heard.

If that is not enough for you, VV (real name Vanessa) is well set to take her place among the ranks of other islandista it girls such as Rihanna and Vashtie Kola, whose sense of style is so quirky, fierce and yet independently theirs, that fashionistas are falling over themselves.

At 5 "11 and with some seriously exotic looks (we're not sure but she looks to be a combination of Jamaican black chinese and hispanic) she was basically commandeered into modelling. She has done a shoot for UK Vogue and performed at London Fashion Week earlier this year, at the invitation of Indian designer Ashish, who is a big fan of hers.

    VV Brown

The fashion pack loves her look, with her signature retro flat top rolled bangs and her charity/vintage shop dress sense. Amidst launching her album, she is also preparing to open her own vintage clothing store, VV Vintage.

So what is the 's' on this islandista-by-descent?

Well to start at the beginning, she is the oldest of six children born to a Jamaican father and Puerto Rican mother in Northampton, England. Her parents run their own school, Overstone Park, which VV attended. She got four As at A'level and turned down Oxford, LSE and a few other big name unis to pursue her music career.

By age 17, she was performing backing vocals for groups such as Westlife, Madonna and the Pussycat Dolls when they did live tv appearances.

She also ended up writing for both the Dolls and British girl group, the Sugababes. Record labels showed interest and she eventually signed a solo deal with Polydor but that ... didn't go too well.

    She told the Times:
"The production took my songs somewhere I had never envisioned. The more strings they added, the more the music lost its honesty and innocence. I was too scared to say I hated it."

The deal broke down and she ended up broke and worse, in love with an "arsehole" as she so succintly puts it. As the relationship broke down and she became even more broke, she sold her keyboard to get a ticket back to London, moved into a teeny unfurnished flat, bought a one-stringed guitar and began to write and sing her heartache.

And that heartache is what has led to her debut album, Travelling Like the Light and her album deal with Island Record.

And now everything has come full circle as she is back in London where she first started her musical career and as it turns out, where fame would find her after all.

Baje & Power X 4 unveil their costumes

    They're baaaaack!

Barbados' two biggest bands, Baje International and Power X Four both unveiled their costumes on Friday in different ways.

Power X Four sent an e-newsletter to their mailing list with a 'sneak peek' of their costumes while Baje International had their official media launch at Red Rock at the end of the Gap.

Here is a look at some of our favourite sections from each band. Px4's presentation this year is entitled '15 years of Love & Revelery' while Baje is 'Fire & Ice'.

    [caption id="attachment_1105" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Power X 4 - Blue Skies"]Power X 4 - Blue Skies[/caption]

Love, love the sky blue colour for this  and the bra piece is just gorgeous and lavishly decorated! Check out more costumes when you read on.

    [caption id="attachment_1106" align="aligncenter" width="199" caption="Baje International - Singapore Sling"]Baje International - Singapore Sling[/caption]

This is actually my favourite costume out of all of the Baje selections this year, most of which are a 'unhh' beneath BD$500. Mystifyingly, this is actually the cheapest section, at 'just' BD$465! Go figure. Yet the singularly unimpressive titular costume Fire & Ice is $499!

    [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Power X Four - Bajan Goddess"]Power X Four - Bajan Goddess[/caption]

Again, loving this pastel pink colour because it is a departure from the colours Px4 usually goes with unlike their 'Energy' section for example which is barely a variation on the standard gold and yellow costume they trot out each year.

    [caption id="attachment_1108" align="aligncenter" width="199" caption="Baje International - Tequila Sunrise"]Baje International - Tequila Sunrise[/caption]

This costume shows Baje trying to stretch their range a leeetle bit. I like the feathered detailing on the waistband - a departure from using just beads on the waist piece and the headband with a burst of feathers off to the side for the headpiece. Sweet.

Now, for a little suss and speculation!

Bajan islandistas would know that Power X Four does not usually present its costumes before Baje - I always got the impression there was some tacit agreement between the two so that revellers were basically compelled to commit to one or the other because they both tended to sell out so quickly there was no time to wait and decide between the two.

However, this year they have jumped the gun and started holding early registration since Friday... the exact same day that Baje was launching. This is despite the fact that their official launch is supposed to be on June 20th. Their explanation for the early 'sneak peek'?
Crop Over fever is in the air, and we can tell by the numerous calls and emails that you are ready and rearing to select your costume for the big day. We are also aware that due to a number of regular bands sitting out of Crop-Over this year, the demand for spaces will be even greater. For this reason, we are giving our faithfuls an exclusive sneak peek at our 2009 presentation.

Mm. hmmmmmm! The recession is real, peoples! I keep telling yuh. Tings brown, Contact costumes are a flat cost across the board and at are generally $100 less than Baje's confirmed and Px4's rumoured price points so every man gotta brek fuh heself.

I don't mind! It is about time these band leaders have to scramble a bit for our support rather than people calling and begging and pleading to get costumes held for them.

Now on to Baje. As we reported earlier, Baje will not be holding its usual round of paid weekly fetes, including its themed fetes like Girl Power. This year they are holding a series of FREE limes at Red Rock Bistro and Bar or as they term it "5 hot recession ready free summer limes".

They will only be holding three main events - their big soca show Collision, their paint/Jouvert fete and a last lap rave.

    Wow.

Honestly, I think Baje's problem is the big, wukking-up elephant in the room that will be at Tim's on the Highway from next Friday. A little huge thing called Brewster's Road. Friday's used to belong to Baje but Brewster's Road went up against them boldly and slaughtered them last year.

Honestly, I think there would be no shame in Baje shifting to like a Thursday or Wednesday night or even switch to the Sunday night slot that Campus Boyz' demise has left open.

Between Brewster's Road and Contact's pork limes on Fridays, it is just looking sticky for Baje or anyone else for that matter, to pull a big crowd, even with a free event.

But we shall see. It is certainly gearing up to be an interesting Crop-Over.

T&T Fashion Week wrap up

Fashion is in the air and blowing like a hurricane from south to north in the space of a fortnight!

Even though Fashion Week Trinidad & Tobago wrapped up on June 2, there is still so much to show and tell from that long weekend of fabulous Caribbean fashion.

This is all the moreso because the folks at our new favourite fashion blog, CF Style have been working... hard! I am exhausted just looking at the amount of photo footage and interviews they got out of FWTT - it is an impressive show of dedication to Caribbean fashion.

Anyhow, here are a few of our picks from FWTT.

    [caption id="attachment_1094" align="aligncenter" width="200" caption="All photo credits: cfstyle.com"]TTFW-brown-sugar-5[/caption]

    All photo credits: cfstyle.com

Loved these very feminine, frilled white dresses from Brown Sugar - they are absolutely perfect for summer and all the fabulous all-inclusives like Bliss, Beach House and Brian Lara's Crop-Over fete.

Well-known Carnival designer Sonia Mack also showed her collection and while many of the outfits were gorgeous, the collection on a whole was confusing and without focus. Fashion blog Step Up Trini Style blinded it, saying:
Honestly I think Ms. Mack needed to have decided what she wanted to make for fashion week: costumes or garments. (And then asked herself where on earth these garments were meant to be worn?) She landed somewhere squarely in between and the results were not impressive.

Ouch. But when you look at the pics you can see what she means. For instance, there was this cute little dress with a very on trend art print that was slightly tropical, paired with a Grace Kelly like scarf.

    TTFW-sonia-mack-13

And there was even ... a wedding dress!

    TTFW-sonia-mack-14

But there were also a few random Indian-inspired pieces like this.

    TTFW-sonia-mack-4

And there were also some gorgeous, chiffon-y dresses like this flame red one.

    TTFW-sonia-mack-10

Maybe Ms. Mack was trying to make a statement about the diversity of Trinidad & Tobago, hence all the different looks?

Or maybe she was trying to show her own diverse ability as a designer? Either way, it was not a coherent collection, though there were many individual hits.

Claudia Pegus also came with a bang, after the trauma of her robbery at gun point just a week before FWTT started. She had said that the experience was going to change the tone of her collection and that she intended to make a statement about "youth, crime and ethnicity" and how trapped everyone feels by crime in T&T.

Did she? Well, see for yourself.

    TTFW-claudia-9

    TTFW-claudia

Damn, Claudia. Tell us how you really feel.

Pelau post - Fay-Ann's post-baby body, D'Angel's bad luck & Lorna getsher own

We are just bursting with news of all things islandista these days! Between all the various summer carnivals, stage shows, parties and two big fashion weeks back to back, we are so busy it's hard to know where to start.

So, to make a dent in all the suss, we're going to hit you with another pelau post - or a pepperpot post if you will - it real mix up but it spicy and good!

First let's start with news of one of our favourite islandista mamis, Fay-Ann Lyons, who has been taking full advantage of her biggest year in soca to date.

As we reported back in May, her first post-pregnancy performance was in Toronto at Dr. Jay's I Love Soca.

We have seen the pics from the event and can we say... Fay-Ann's post baby body is just... unnecessary! How is it that a woman who just had a baby two months ago (and was round like an English pound as the fellas would say) could already be slimmer than chicks who are not pregnant at all?

    [caption id="attachment_1087" align="aligncenter" width="230" caption="This... is not fair."]This... is not fair.[/caption]

I swear, I going protest to somebody. Obviously, she is not back to six-pack Fay-Ann but damn it man, all she have the nerve to show is a lil pudge?

We have some news of another well-known islandista mummy who is having a string of bad luck recently - Jamaican dancehall act D'Angel.

Her clothing boutique in Kingston was held up and robbed on Monday. Gunmen tied up her employee and made off with J$400 000 (about US$4500) in clothes, accessories etc.

That alone would be bad but it follows close on the heels of her accident less than two weeks ago that wrote off her X5 when she was on her way to a party at footballer Bibi Gardiner's place in St. Thomas. D' Angel said then:
I was on my way to Bibi's dance in St. Thomas, we couldn't have been more than one minute away when all of a sudden a car ran into us....my side of the vehicle mash up...the airbag dem deploy same time...it was like a movie, I was a spectator to it all."

Worse, the fellas that crashed into her car soon got into another vehicle and took off. Damn... a so dem billias?

In other slightly better news (but not if you're Buju!), his common law wife of 18 years and mother of his 5 children, Lorna Strachan is smiling all the way to the bank after Buju decided to do the smart thing and settle out of court with her.

Apparently Buju wanted to play hardball with her at first even though she was making him a pretty reasonable offer to just have a few of the properties they own jointly, given to her.

So Lorna (yes, her of Buju's 90s hit Love mi Brownin) took the matter to the Supreme Court and Buju soon wised up, realising that their long marriage, even though common-law, still entitled her to half of what he owned. A source close to the couple reported:
"She had his back against the wall. After so many years of them being together, she would be entitled to half of everything he owns. So it made sense for him to give her what she was asking for."

And half of what Buju owns is a pretty penny. The properties included in the claim included an apartment at Priory Court, Devon Road, St Andrew, the property at Ballater Avenue, Kingston 10, which houses the Donovan Germain-led Penthouse empire; houses at Jacaranda Close, Braeton, St Catherine; Carlisle Avenue, Kingston 8; and the family house in Belgrade Heights, Kingston 19.

In the end Lorna came away with the Belgrade Heights house she currently lives in and 25% of the Ballater Avenue property.

I can't stop laughing at this one. Dah fuh he! Too often West Indian men want to feel that they can do women as they like - horn them non-stop, refuse to marry them and then when de women tired of them, they want to get spiteful, even when their own pickney involved.

More women need to stand up for their financial rights and move more seriously. In the end, all she asked for was the house she and his children are living in and 25% of another property - that is barely anything in the scheme of things - you think it is a little bit of money Buju made off of Til Shiloh?

More costume bands from NYC to Bim

Week by week, Barbados' Crop-Over festival is heating up with more bands launching.

Small and mid-size bands such as Wednesday 2000, Jump and Ooutraje have all launched recently.

Our initial reaction to Wednesday 2000 was ... mehhhh. A lot of the costumes just were not cutting it, like these two selections below.

    Band-Wed 2000-chaos

What's going on here? Did they spend all the money on the (admittedly nice) headpiece and just decide to forget about getting a waistpiece or decent leg bands or some appliques or someting to take de shame off the gold lame sports bra?

    Band-Wed 2000-colour splash

This costume also did not really do it for us. We get that it's supposed to be a colour splash hence all the different colours in the headpiece and in the appliques on the bra but it looks like federation. I actually prefer the guy's outfit. At least they bothered to get a waistband for this one though.

Some of the other costumes however were less mehhh. They did not make us swoon with excitement but they were wearable.

    Band-Wed 2000-frenzy

Now lest you think that we here at islandista are just philistines who adhere strictly to the 'bikini and beads' philosophy, that is not entirely true... not entirely! For instance, we are fans of the work done by small band Ooutraje which manages to span the gap between artistry and sexiness.

Their 2009 presentation, In the Beginning, is no different. The costumes are for the most part sexy and wearable yet they also actually (shock!) depict a theme - the beginnings of Barbados.

While there are some elements that would give us pause in our quest for ultra-sexiness on the road, such as the jar/water vessel as the headpiece and the chains, we can see and appreciate where they are going with this and why. At least they are committed to the theme. I wonder if the face painting will be included too? That would make for a great stage presentation!

We also really liked their Arawaks costume and this is actually less out there than the Africans costume. I also really, really like the costumes they have for the fellas. Too often a lot of the bands just give them a boxer shorts and some leg and arm bands and leave it at that. For the amount they have to pay, they deserve the full works too!

    [caption id="attachment_1077" align="aligncenter" width="450" caption="Jump Promotions 2009 presentation 'Sweet for Days'."]Jump Promotions 2009 presentation 'Sweet for Days'.[/caption]

Jump has also launched (costumes above) and their prices are some of the best out for Crop-Over, especially considering that a lot of their costumes are quite decent and you still get the same perks as other bands - food, drinks, wee-wee truck etc.

Further afield, Ramajay mas launched their presentation for the 2009 Labour Day carnival in New York City.  The interesting thing I found about a lot of their costumes was that while they were not strong on some of the things we expect on our costumes like intricate and fully beaded waistbands in some instances or dramatic feathered headpieces in others, they had all these fascinating other details like spectacular backpacks (Rain and Green Jasper) or billowing wing-like arm pieces/capes (D'Amazons, directly below).  Check it.

Kadooment band launches- Contact is here!

The music has been out for a while and now Crop-Over is finally getting into full swing with launches of some more bands, including some of Barbados' largest and most popular bands.

    [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="206" caption="Amber - photo credit: contact.bb"]photo credit: contact.bb[/caption]

Contact launched on Friday with a wicked, wicked launch party and the pics of their 2009 presentation 'Firestones' are already up. Check out some more of our faves from the band when you read on...

    [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="216" caption="Black Diamond- photo credit: contact.bb"]Band-contact-black diamond[/caption]

    [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="206" caption="Pink Diamond- photo credit: contact.bb"]Pink diamond - photo credit: contact.bb[/caption]

    [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="218" caption="Pearl- photo credit: contact.bb"]Pearl - photo credit: contact.bb[/caption]

Can we say...  it is presssssuurrrre dey bringing for some of the established bougie folks' bands like Baje and Power X Four! Loving the black diamond section - you don't see too many black costumes in Barbados for some reason and they have done it beautifully. The Amber has a lavishly feathered headpiece and if you read islandista, you know our feather fetish already so that gone clear!

We are somewhat conflicted on the pearl section so we put it up to see what the islandista family think. My question is why brown to depict pearls? Especially when brown tends to look so blah on black people? I just never find that brown pops against our skin. If they were going for pearl, why not go for a full white costume? Not white and silver or white and gold as many do but white on white. It would be blinding on the road in the sun!

Anyhow, while in the past Contact had a reputation as more a middle-aged folks band, in the last 3 years they have been making a serious pitch for the young, bougie market that Px4 and Baje had on lock. They have had mixed results.

They drew a lot of young people last year with both their sexier designs and by pitching that they had not just the usual Krosfyah (who has been with Contact for ages) on the road but Machel Montano who was the real winner of last year's Crop-Over.

Unfortunately for some of those who were swayed by the promise of Machel on the road, it turned out to be just that - he was on the road and wining rather than on the truck singing. Worse, he  skipped out and ended up spending as much time liming and wining over in Baje as he did in Contact. Big rock fuh those who jumped Contact just for Machel.

Moreover, the vibe was still persistently middle-aged and tame, according to some  who jumped the Px4 and Baje ships to jump with them.

But it remains to be seen. A year is a long time in playing mas and Contact is floating rumours once again. The big one this year is that they are going to have Fay-Ann Lyons and Bunji Garlin as well as Krosfyah and Machel Montano on the road. The thought of that combination got a looot of people head just hurting them - is a real dilemma! Every other person we ask is wavering just because of that - all you hearing is "BUT... I hear they gine got Fay-Ann, Bunji, Krosfyah AND Machel on the road!"

But that is the question - will Fay-Ann and Bunji be on the road wining or will they be on the truck on the road singing?
