Something old, something new - Crop-Over costumes 2011

Crop-Over is coming islandistas and despite being in hibernation for the last few months (between my wedding late last year and now my first pregnancy happening back-to-back, I've been ex-hausted!), that is enough to bring the Islandista out of her cyber-cave!

So Power x Four is both the old and new of this post - pics of their 2011 costumes have popped up on Trinidad Carnival Diary but... it's a rehash of last year - Bajan Reef Pt II no less! Booo, hisss!

I guess you can say they prepped us by calling last year's presentation Bajan Reef Pt I but come onnn. It's not as if this is some great, conceptual costume story that needs to be told over the course of two years - it is pretty-colour FISH dammit!

It feels lazy from Power X Four and though they have been my preferred band for jumping for the vast majority of years I've jumped Crop-Over, I gotta call it as I see it. It smacks of what they did in their 10th anniversary year in 2004 when they recreated costumes from their previous years.

That said, the costumes are pretty  - Px4 is always consistent in its quality and beauty. We especially like Night Octopus and Queen Conch.

Now for the NEW new! A certain Crop-Over band is recreating its image and is coming out fresh in 2011 as Fantasy and the costumes we've seen thus far are gorgeous! They are really going to make a stir on the scene for this Crop-Over and give Baje, Px4 and Contact a run for their money. Check out some of our faves from Fantasy below.

So what do you think, islandistas? Getting excited yet?

Renee Ratcliffe takes the big one!

A huge, huge congratulations to a truly inspiring islandista Renee Ratcliffe on taking the biggest prizes for mas in this year's Crop-Over festival.

After years of knocking at the door, Renee bested the veterans queens of the mas - Gwyneth Squires and Betty West, coming out on top to win the prestigious Festival Designer of the Year and Large Band of the Year for her Jump Promotions' presentation Spirit of the Gap.

Truly, Renee deserved to win and as a still young designer, her victory augurs well for the future of the festival. I got a look at Jump before they moved off from Warrens and the presentation had just that right balance of artistry and sexy we have debated times before here on Islandista.

Not to mention that Renee is someone with a fantastic spirit. As a cub reporter I interviewed her some years back after she had suffered two debilitating heart attacks and a stroke when she was just 28 years old and contrary to the expression "serious as a heart attack" she was bussing big jokes about it all!

Congrats again - it's your time Renee!

Crop-Over 2K10 trend - Foreday Morning bands!

The hottest thing for Crop-Over this year (besides Lil Rick's monster, ultra-bashy tune 'Guh Dung') seems to be Foreday Morning (aka Jouvert) bands.

(Photo credit: Island Fusion via Facebook)

Last Crop-Over, there were only five official Foreday Morning bands, plus the heaving mass of humans behind the two trucks from the HIV/AIDS Commission and Roberts Manufacturing.

But this year, official sources have said there are as many as FIFTEEN bands registered - three times as much!

Among the new Foreday Morning bands that have sprung up are Island Fusion, Green Lizards from Island Vibez, Bakshun from Oasys Entertainment and Muddslyde from Power X 4. Check out Bakshun's outfits under the cut.

It's interesting that so many groups have decided to throw in their lot with Foreday Morning because ever since the Foreday Morning Jam started about a decade ago, it has had limited popularity, particularly with the middle-class segment.

Because of the heaving masses we mentioned earlier, who have tended to dominate the proceedings, Foreday Morning got a reputation for being a wild and out of control midnight mas.

That reputation was not at all enhanced when two young men got killed in separate incidents in 2003 and 2005 when revellers got run over by trucks after being jostled/falling underneath the wheels. Islandista actually witnessed/reported on the aftermath of the latter incident and it was a terrible moment.

Those incidents soured many people on Foreday Morning and they turned towards safer events away from the madding crowd like Baje's Jouvert/paint fete.

But this year the tide definitely seems to be turning back towards Foreday Morning.

Islandista will be jumping with Island Fusion, a band founded by five quintessentially islandista chicks so we will give you the scoop!

Barbados' biggest Crop-Over bands launch!

    [caption id="attachment_2392" align="aligncenter" width="490" caption="Power x 4's selection of ladies costumes for Crop-Over 2010"][/caption]

Islandistas, I know it has been a minute - my apologies!

How could I abandon you, especially at a time like this when Barbados' Crop-Over festival is now heading into full swing?

The last week has been the unofficial official start to the festival - Baje International launched last Friday, Power x 4 is officially launching this Saturday, Brewster's Road Crew starting their fetes this Friday and Passion Network this Saturday!

Oh, and two of Power x 4's sections are ALREADY sold out, after 'early registration' started on Monday.

Yeah-  is like da this Crop-Over.

Baje seeing real action too - they launched on Friday and by Saturday, the two Trini sections run by Island People and Tribe were sold out - had chicks in Bim scrambling to pull strings in TnT to get into the sections. Mind you, we never hear of Trinis having to pull strings any place else to get costumes in dey own island but dem must know ...

Take a look at our faves in each band after the cut...

As we said, two of Px4's sections have already sold out - the brilliant green and blue Parrotfish was the first to go, followed by the pink and orange Sea Anemone.

    [caption id="attachment_2393" align="aligncenter" width="305" caption="Px4- Parrotfish"][/caption]

However, our fave is the purple and pink Violet Starfish costume.

    [caption id="attachment_2394" align="aligncenter" width="306" caption="Px4 - Violet Starfish"][/caption]

When it comes to Baje's costumes, we have one major gripe - when we heard a name like 'free to fly' the first thing we thought was "goodie! gorgeous wing-like arm pieces" - which islandista readers would know by now is a costume weakness of ours, second only to (say it all together now) lavishly feathered headpieces.

But lo! Not a single wing. Not one. Aside from hovercraft and helicopters (certain never to be costume themes) don't all flying things have wings? Bitterly disappointed we are.

The closest we got to wings was the very sexy Free to Fly frontline costume - though Baje seemed to be specifically trying to make it up to me by having lots and lots and lots of feathers on this costume.

    [caption id="attachment_2395" align="aligncenter" width="325" caption="Baje free to fly frontline"][/caption]

Tempting but I would have preferred real wings.

The Trini sections making chicks lose their minds and dial 868 numbers on repeat are the sexy green and purple Heaven to Earth by Tribe and the ok Silver Smoke by Island People.

    [caption id="attachment_2396" align="aligncenter" width="327" caption="Baje- Heaven to Earth by Tribe"][/caption]

    [caption id="attachment_2397" align="aligncenter" width="294" caption="Baje - Silver Smoke by Island People"][/caption]

In other Baje news, after their well-documented troubles of the last two years when it came to the declining appeal of their parties and fetes, they have given in to the might that is Brewster's Road (not to mention the Contact Pork Limes - which started last Friday) and switched from their long-held Friday night slot to the freer Sunday night slot - which we actually suggested they do since like, last year.

However, in waiting a year to do so, they might have left the door open for last year's break out star - the oh-so-sweet Party Central limes which we raved about and gave the official Islandista Stamp of Approval to.

So ... it remains to be seen how this Crop-Over season will play out. It all begins in earnest this weekend - we'll let you know!

First look at Berger Boyz for Crop-Over 2010 & more...

    [caption id="attachment_2311" align="aligncenter" width="450" caption="Berger Boyz for 2010 - Togetherness. (Photo credit: Berger Boyz on Facebook)"][/caption]

So Berger Boyz is the first mas band out of the blocks for Barbados' Crop-Over festival this year (unless Lights has had another 'exclusive' launch like last year).

And um... their presentation is called Togetherness... and... well there's nothing much more we can give you in terms of analysis because it's pretty but it doesn't mean a damn thing as you will see in the pics of our faves below.

[caption id="attachment_2308" align="aligncenter" width="260" caption="Life... I guess cos green represents like trees and growth and stuff?"][/caption]

    [caption id="attachment_2309" align="aligncenter" width="260" caption="Love. Because pink and red represent hearts... maybe?"][/caption]

[caption id="attachment_2310" align="aligncenter" width="260" caption="Wisdom. We got nothing for this one... yellow = wisdom why? But we like the feathered headpieces:)"][/caption]

They may as well call the sections blue, green and yellow and be done with it because the colours don't represent anything at all - and that is saying a lot for a 'beads and bikini' pretty mas band. I mean cuhdear, at least led red be for 'fire' and blue for 'water' - at least tek a lil shame off it, man!

In other Crop-Over news, the party scene is about to get started a week from now when the people's partying champs, Brewsters Road Crew, kicks off the first of their pre-Crop-Over limes.

That same night, the National Cultural Foundation is also reported to be launching the first of their Soca limes. Even though their official calendar is not out on their site as yet, we obtained a copy of  what is supposed to be the calendar for this year.

Friday nights in Bim will be busy this year between BRC, NCF and Contact - who will prevail?

Summer Carnival season 2010 is here!

Ye, ye, last year we announced this in May but we are just busting this year! We even more hype than usual!

And the bands aren't holding back either - two bands from traditional August carnivals - Antigua's Myst and Barbados' Berger Boyz, have already launched, all in April... so why should we hold back!

In the words of Queen Fay-Ann ... let's go!

The Vincies and Lucians already have things well underway for their July carnivals which are July 5th & 6th and July 19th & 20th this year.

In SVG, Ahdrenalin is going hard with their presentation 'Western Mayhem- the Decline of Western Civilisation'. Check some of our faves.

    [caption id="attachment_2273" align="aligncenter" width="270" caption="Material Girl (Photo credit: Ahdrenalin.com)"][/caption]

    [caption id="attachment_2274" align="aligncenter" width="270" caption="Wings of Hope"][/caption]

    [caption id="attachment_2275" align="aligncenter" width="270" caption="Exotic Delusion"][/caption]

Interestingly enough, even though the eagle-eyed Saucy over at Trinidad Carnival Diary has picked up at least one remix from Trini band D'Krewe, with Ahdrenalin's Nights of Debauchery being a dead ringer for D'Krewe's Sorceror, that costume was not even near our favourite so I guess it just goes to show...

Check out some more of our faves from St. Lucia Carnival's Just for Fun and their reimagining  of the Great Loves of the Past under the cut.

    [caption id="attachment_2276" align="aligncenter" width="258" caption="Dr. Zhivago"][/caption]

    [caption id="attachment_2278" align="aligncenter" width="253" caption="Bonnie & Clyde"][/caption]

    [caption id="attachment_2277" align="aligncenter" width="252" caption="Paris and Helena"][/caption]

Up North, London's Notting Hill Carnival bands are also launching and Bacchanal Mas was one of the first out the gates. Their presentation this year is called Traditions and we're loving it, even though it too has its detractors on TCD. Someone said slyly that they should call it Traditions of Tribe - an obvious reference to Tribe's 2007 'Old Time Something'  which we featured and praised here on Islandista some years ago.

Here are two sections we especially loved - Pierrot Grenade (LOVE the headpiece interpretation!) and (blue?) Devils.

    [caption id="attachment_2279" align="aligncenter" width="284" caption="Devils Frontline"][/caption]

    [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="294" caption="Pierrot Grenade headpiece"][/caption]

And here is how they translated in person at the band's launch a fortnight ago in London-town.

    [caption id="attachment_2282" align="aligncenter" width="294" caption="Devils Frontline"][/caption]

Palancing in Kingston!

    [caption id="attachment_2237" align="aligncenter" width="360" caption="Photo credit: SociaLingua"][/caption]

The 'little carnival that could' - Jamaica Carnival, would have wrapped up today in Kingston.

In the face of all resistance from many in JA society who decry Carnival as slackness (including, ironically, many supporters of the dancehall community) and lick out against it, Ja carnival keeps pressing on and growing.

One of the best nights of JA Carnival is Jouvert - and even though Islandista is more partial to Joker's Wild Jouvert than Bacchanal Jamaica, these pics from Socia Lingua of Bacchanal's Jouvert on Friday night, kinda make us wish we were there!

    [caption id="attachment_2238" align="aligncenter" width="360" caption="Photo credit: Socia Lingua"][/caption]

Check out even more photos under the cut!

Palancing to de crown!

Well that was easy to predict - JW and Blaze's huuugely popular Palance secured the Power Soca Monarch title last night in Trinidad. Click here for the video of the winning performance.

The smart money is on them to take Road March as well since they not only won, but won convincingly - by a full 17 points over defending monarch Fay-Ann Lyons'  True Lies - 81 to her 64.

It was much, much tighter in the Groovy Soca Monarch contest, with Shurwayne Winchester's Murdah prevailing over defending monarch Fay-Ann's Start Wining by just one point - 58 to 57. In fact, the whole top four was tight as Rikki Jai's Barman placed third with 56 points and Patrice Roberts Wuk It (she like de wukking ting yes?)  placed fourth with 55 points.

Trini Carnival - a look forward and a look back

Even though we're in the midst of the summer Carnival season, things are already heating up for Trinidad Carnival 2010.

Talk is already flying about what plans the various mas bands in TnT have in store for 2010 and two top Trinidadian mas bands - Spice and Carnival Tribe, are set to hold their band launches this month on July 19th and 25th respectively.

In fact, Spice has already given us all a sneak peek of their 2010 presentation, The Spice Route, when they held their media launch two weeks ago.

They displayed the front line costumes of two sections - the Caspian Sea and Rubies of Mumbai and they are bee-yoo-tee-ful!

I especially like the Rubies of Mumbai (below). The tear-drop shaped red gems dripping off the waist piece and the sari like material for the shoulders - fantastic!

    [caption id="attachment_1201" align="aligncenter" width="292" caption="photo credit: Joel Angelo/Triniscene.com"]photo credit: Joel Angelo/Triniscene.com[/caption]

    [caption id="attachment_1202" align="aligncenter" width="292" caption="photo credit: Joel Angelo/Triniscene.com"]photo credit: Joel Angelo/Triniscene.com[/caption]

Spice's Eastern theme is one that seems to be quite popular for Trini Carnival '10. Tribe is going with 'The Secret of Silk' - a slight change up from what was rumoured to be the original name - The Silk Road.

On top of that, Island People's presentation for next year is rumoured to be called Kuchela while Legacy's presentation is Masala.

So it gine be bare bindis and mehendi in your curry la la for Carnival 2010. Honestly, I'm excited. There is something about Eastern inspirations that really bring out the beauty in a Carnival costume. The rich colours and jewelling, not to mention all the extra fun you can have with accessorising!

We're also feeling an early, early Carnival spirit because of a photo spread in the last ever Vibe magazine - the June/July 2009 issue that has turned out to be their last.

They did a fashion spread based on and at Trinidad Carnival 09, featuring the ubiquitous Ms. Trinidad Universe 09 Anya Ayoung-Chee and Trinbagonian model Kenywn Millington.

The pics are great. It is a mix of fashion and Carnival revelery with shocks of colour and plenty bacchanal. Take a look at some of the pics below.

Baje & Power X 4 unveil their costumes

    They're baaaaack!

Barbados' two biggest bands, Baje International and Power X Four both unveiled their costumes on Friday in different ways.

Power X Four sent an e-newsletter to their mailing list with a 'sneak peek' of their costumes while Baje International had their official media launch at Red Rock at the end of the Gap.

Here is a look at some of our favourite sections from each band. Px4's presentation this year is entitled '15 years of Love & Revelery' while Baje is 'Fire & Ice'.

    [caption id="attachment_1105" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Power X 4 - Blue Skies"]Power X 4 - Blue Skies[/caption]

Love, love the sky blue colour for this  and the bra piece is just gorgeous and lavishly decorated! Check out more costumes when you read on.

    [caption id="attachment_1106" align="aligncenter" width="199" caption="Baje International - Singapore Sling"]Baje International - Singapore Sling[/caption]

This is actually my favourite costume out of all of the Baje selections this year, most of which are a 'unhh' beneath BD$500. Mystifyingly, this is actually the cheapest section, at 'just' BD$465! Go figure. Yet the singularly unimpressive titular costume Fire & Ice is $499!

    [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Power X Four - Bajan Goddess"]Power X Four - Bajan Goddess[/caption]

Again, loving this pastel pink colour because it is a departure from the colours Px4 usually goes with unlike their 'Energy' section for example which is barely a variation on the standard gold and yellow costume they trot out each year.

    [caption id="attachment_1108" align="aligncenter" width="199" caption="Baje International - Tequila Sunrise"]Baje International - Tequila Sunrise[/caption]

This costume shows Baje trying to stretch their range a leeetle bit. I like the feathered detailing on the waistband - a departure from using just beads on the waist piece and the headband with a burst of feathers off to the side for the headpiece. Sweet.

Now, for a little suss and speculation!

Bajan islandistas would know that Power X Four does not usually present its costumes before Baje - I always got the impression there was some tacit agreement between the two so that revellers were basically compelled to commit to one or the other because they both tended to sell out so quickly there was no time to wait and decide between the two.

However, this year they have jumped the gun and started holding early registration since Friday... the exact same day that Baje was launching. This is despite the fact that their official launch is supposed to be on June 20th. Their explanation for the early 'sneak peek'?
Crop Over fever is in the air, and we can tell by the numerous calls and emails that you are ready and rearing to select your costume for the big day. We are also aware that due to a number of regular bands sitting out of Crop-Over this year, the demand for spaces will be even greater. For this reason, we are giving our faithfuls an exclusive sneak peek at our 2009 presentation.

Mm. hmmmmmm! The recession is real, peoples! I keep telling yuh. Tings brown, Contact costumes are a flat cost across the board and at are generally $100 less than Baje's confirmed and Px4's rumoured price points so every man gotta brek fuh heself.

I don't mind! It is about time these band leaders have to scramble a bit for our support rather than people calling and begging and pleading to get costumes held for them.

Now on to Baje. As we reported earlier, Baje will not be holding its usual round of paid weekly fetes, including its themed fetes like Girl Power. This year they are holding a series of FREE limes at Red Rock Bistro and Bar or as they term it "5 hot recession ready free summer limes".

They will only be holding three main events - their big soca show Collision, their paint/Jouvert fete and a last lap rave.

    Wow.

Honestly, I think Baje's problem is the big, wukking-up elephant in the room that will be at Tim's on the Highway from next Friday. A little huge thing called Brewster's Road. Friday's used to belong to Baje but Brewster's Road went up against them boldly and slaughtered them last year.

Honestly, I think there would be no shame in Baje shifting to like a Thursday or Wednesday night or even switch to the Sunday night slot that Campus Boyz' demise has left open.

Between Brewster's Road and Contact's pork limes on Fridays, it is just looking sticky for Baje or anyone else for that matter, to pull a big crowd, even with a free event.

But we shall see. It is certainly gearing up to be an interesting Crop-Over.

More costume bands from NYC to Bim

Week by week, Barbados' Crop-Over festival is heating up with more bands launching.

Small and mid-size bands such as Wednesday 2000, Jump and Ooutraje have all launched recently.

Our initial reaction to Wednesday 2000 was ... mehhhh. A lot of the costumes just were not cutting it, like these two selections below.

    Band-Wed 2000-chaos

What's going on here? Did they spend all the money on the (admittedly nice) headpiece and just decide to forget about getting a waistpiece or decent leg bands or some appliques or someting to take de shame off the gold lame sports bra?

    Band-Wed 2000-colour splash

This costume also did not really do it for us. We get that it's supposed to be a colour splash hence all the different colours in the headpiece and in the appliques on the bra but it looks like federation. I actually prefer the guy's outfit. At least they bothered to get a waistband for this one though.

Some of the other costumes however were less mehhh. They did not make us swoon with excitement but they were wearable.

    Band-Wed 2000-glow

    Band-Wed 2000-frenzy

Now lest you think that we here at islandista are just philistines who adhere strictly to the 'bikini and beads' philosophy, that is not entirely true... not entirely! For instance, we are fans of the work done by small band Ooutraje which manages to span the gap between artistry and sexiness.

Their 2009 presentation, In the Beginning, is no different. The costumes are for the most part sexy and wearable yet they also actually (shock!) depict a theme - the beginnings of Barbados.

    [caption id="attachment_1075" align="aligncenter" width="257" caption="Africans"]Band-ooutraje-africans[/caption]

While there are some elements that would give us pause in our quest for ultra-sexiness on the road, such as the jar/water vessel as the headpiece and the chains, we can see and appreciate where they are going with this and why. At least they are committed to the theme. I wonder if the face painting will be included too? That would make for a great stage presentation!

    [caption id="attachment_1076" align="aligncenter" width="257" caption="Arawaks"]Arawaks[/caption]

We also really liked their Arawaks costume and this is actually less out there than the Africans costume. I also really, really like the costumes they have for the fellas. Too often a lot of the bands just give them a boxer shorts and some leg and arm bands and leave it at that. For the amount they have to pay, they deserve the full works too!

    [caption id="attachment_1077" align="aligncenter" width="450" caption="Jump Promotions 2009 presentation 'Sweet for Days'."]Jump Promotions 2009 presentation 'Sweet for Days'.[/caption]

Jump has also launched (costumes above) and their prices are some of the best out for Crop-Over, especially considering that a lot of their costumes are quite decent and you still get the same perks as other bands - food, drinks, wee-wee truck etc.

Further afield, Ramajay mas launched their presentation for the 2009 Labour Day carnival in New York City.  The interesting thing I found about a lot of their costumes was that while they were not strong on some of the things we expect on our costumes like intricate and fully beaded waistbands in some instances or dramatic feathered headpieces in others, they had all these fascinating other details like spectacular backpacks (Rain and Green Jasper) or billowing wing-like arm pieces/capes (D'Amazons, directly below).  Check it.
