Trend alert: dark lipstick

Didn't we predict it?

Just a few weeks back, we mused that we may soon see the return of early 90s trends like dark lipstick and now, one of the key makeup trends for the fall 2009 season is ... dark, vampy lipstick.

Celebs like Kelly Rowland and Amerie were seen sporting dark, wine coloured lipstick at New York Fashion Week last week and Vogue magazine's September 2009 issue highlights the trend in an article and it is also featured on some models in their editorials.

And now dark lipstick has the fashionista/islandista stamp of approval - Rihanna has rocked the look two days in a row.

So go and dig out your dark lipstick and if you don't have it, go out and buy it!

Trend alert: Distressed jeans

Like it or not, the 80s fashion train keeps rolling on... and on. Isn't 20-odd years just a little too soon to be bringing trends back, though? Then again, maybe that is how people felt in the 90s when trends from the 70s came back in (boot cut jeans = bell bottoms as far as my mother was concerned) so it is our turn to feel old.

Just ... the 80s. Damn. That was such a sad decade for fashion, I really thought we would have skipped that one and just gone straight to the 90s. Ah well...

The latest trend from the 80s train? Distressed jeans - or damaged jeans as we used to call them or "what the hell is that - you buy new brand jeans that rip up already?!" as our mothers used to call them.



Distressed jeans are roaring in as one of the biggest trends of the summer. Though I have not spotted many chicks wearing the look yet here in the islands, it is only a matter of time as celebs galore, both islandistas and non-islandistas, have been rocking them with a vengeance in the last few weeks.

 Rihanna of course has been at the front of the pack, wearing distressed jeans with anything she can find - blazers, corsets, jackets. Islandista-by-descent Cameron Diaz (ha! didn't know she was an islandista did you? Well she is - her late father Emilio Diaz was Cuban-American. Cameron however, no habla espanol) also wore distressed jeans to the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards a few months back.  




Beyonce, lil sis Solange and singers Keri Hilson and Ciara have also been spotted wearing distressed jeans. 

Chicks have been doing everything from dressing them up to dressing them down, wearing them with sneakers or with stiletto heels, wearing them rolled up or just straight and everywhere from the airport to shopping to dinner at Mr. Chow's.

So don't say we didn't warn yuh. Distressed jeans in yuh pweffen this summer.

Notes on the BET Awards 08 - Mellow yellow

The colour on the red carpet at last night's BET Awards 2008 was definitely yellow - the perfect colour for summer and a big trend for Summer 08.

It's actually my favourite colour choice out of the neon brights that are so in for this season.  Hence I've been pouncing on cute yellow items whenever I get the chance - already snagged a gorgeous strappy yellow sundress and a thin sweater top. Plus, yellow just pops against dark skin.

Islandista Rihanna looked gorgeous in her tiered, frill-edged long yellow dress. Even though Rihanna is pretty light-skinned and yellow can sometimes be dodgy for people that are well ... kinda yella, it still worked well for her, especially because it was offset by the darker makeup. Also, it was a paler, kind of lemony yellow rather than a strong, sharp yellow which might have played up the yellow tones in her skin.

Since she's so young, the brightness of the dress and the tiers prevented her from looking too old which can be the downfall of a lot of young starlets trying to look sophisticated at formal occasions. Bright yellow is just a lovely young looking colour that made the long dress more age-appropriate for a hot young thang like Ri-Ri.



Rapper Trina and singer Keyshia Cole also wore beautiful lemony yellow dresses. Keyshia and Trina carried the summery theme to its hilt with short, flirty dresses. This is probably one of the nicest looks I have ever seen on Trina - for once she does not look too fussy or overdone (aside from the big ole over-curly weave but let us be positive). The simplicity of the dress is really heartening and with such a lovely colour who needs to be too fancy?




Keyshia's bubble dress meanwhile was accented with a great contrasting black sash. Paired with her new jet-black hair it was very sharp - nice Keyshia!

Summer trend: tams

Or beanies. Or knitted caps.

Whatever. It's one fashion trend for the summer that I can definitely get behind and support ... and it is not often I can say that in these 80s-regurgitating, skinny-jean wearing, leg-warmer sporting lord-save-us, last days of fashion.

I started noticing it a few weeks ago at various parties -several chicks (like the one below, third from left) were rocking tams and I wondered if it is was just a coincidence of bad hair days.

But when I started noticing it on celebs such as Jennifer Hudson and our own islandista Rihanna, I realised it was not a coincidence - the tam is having a 'moment'!

And I say - hurray to that! For me, my first love affair with the tam harkens back to my UWI days (which WERE bad hair days) and the first time I started asserting and truly expressing my rootsy/bohemian/funky/slightly touristy style. Tams, cowrie shells, wrap skirts, head wraps, funky, chunky jewellery was all a part of my style so I'm more than happy to see tams making a comeback.

On that point... I've also noticed a bit more than a hint of long, floaty skirts making a comeback a la the ubiquitous boho trend of summer 2005...but this time in a few more colours. Could it be? And where would that leave the dressed up, sexy secretary look (pencil skirts, peep toe pumps, cinched waists) of recent times? I don't think the two looks can be reconciled - it will be interesting to see which one dominates this summer.
