Islandistas @ Met Costume Institute Ball

We're baaa-aack! ... With more pics of our picks from the Met Costume Institute Ball last night in New York City.

The winner of the night in the islandistas style stakes - and possibly overall - was Jennifer Lopez.

She looked gorgeous in her irridescent, glimmering gown by Zuhair Murad. The sweetheart neckline, the leaf detail in the skirt... perfection.

    [picapp align="center" wrap="false" link="term=met+costume+institute+gala+2010+jennifer+lopez&iid=8692371" src="4/b/c/e/_American_Woman_3667.jpg?adImageId=12744188&imageId=8692371" width="234" height="352" /]

    Do 'um Jenny!

JLo was right on target fashion wise as nude tones of greige (grey and beige) dominated the night - with Kate Hudson, Katy Perry, Jessica Alba, Sarah Jessica Parker, Gwen Stefani and Anne Hathaway all sporting variations of beige, cream, coral etc.

Eva Mendes,  went very differently style-wise with colours and patterns as opposed to neutrals and texture  in a rose-patterned Dolce & Gabbana gown with a fish-tail skirt - perfect for the curvy Cubana.

    [picapp align="center" wrap="false" link="term=met+costume+institute+gala+2010+Eva+Mendes&iid=8696562" src="b/2/8/4/MET_Costume_Institute_2aea.jpg?adImageId=12744272&imageId=8696562" width="234" height="354" /]

Check out more islandista style and some of our favourite non-islandista fashionistas (and some misses!) under the cut.

Naomi Campbell was a bit Morticia-like in her black gown.

    [picapp align="center" wrap="false" link="term=met+costume+institute+gala+2010+Naomi+Campbell&iid=8694747" src="c/8/1/6/_American_Woman_be14.jpg?adImageId=12744284&imageId=8694747" width="234" height="289" /]

We're torn about Rosario Dawson's Giambatista Valli dress. We love the ruffled confection of a skirt and I guess in that vein, the pink colour makes sense - all candyish. But something about it just makes us think of Pepto-Bismol more than cotton candy.

    [picapp align="center" wrap="false" link="term=met+costume+institute+gala+2010+Rosario+Dawson&iid=8694706" src="d/b/b/1/_American_Woman_f137.jpg?adImageId=12744338&imageId=8694706" width="234" height="351" /]

We loooved Thandie Newton's magenta gown!

    [picapp align="center" wrap="false" link="term=met+costume+institute+gala+2010&iid=8694859" src="2/2/4/b/_American_Woman_cd79.jpg?adImageId=12746922&imageId=8694859" width="234" height="352" /]

And Emmy Rossum's cornflower blue dress was simple but the colour and the chunky necklace made it a hit!

    [picapp align="center" wrap="false" link="term=met+costume+institute+gala+2010&iid=8694260" src="f/4/d/0/_American_Woman_9b5f.jpg?adImageId=12747165&imageId=8694260" width="234" height="352" /]

On the other design detail end, Blake Lively also wore blue but in a very different way - short and with a dense and fluffy shoulder and skirt detail which was just fantastic.

    [picapp align="center" wrap="false" link="term=met+costume+institute+gala+2010+Blake+Lively&iid=8692880" src="f/c/8/8/_American_Woman_d340.jpg?adImageId=12747184&imageId=8692880" width="234" height="376" /]

Quite on the other end - it's ironic that sometimes it is designers themselves that are fashion misses - or in the case of Donatella Versace, a permanent fashion miss.

Diane von Furstenberg was a real miss in our opinion last night. Her navy gown with the white stars splashed across it just made her look like Captain America's wife - or a giant flag - take your pick.

    [picapp align="center" wrap="false" link="term=met+costume+institute+gala+2010+Von+Furstenberg&iid=8694839" src="e/a/5/4/_American_Woman_9bb3.jpg?adImageId=12744368&imageId=8694839" width="234" height="351" /]

    Urghh.

Islandista mag covers - Naomi & Zoe S

    [caption id="attachment_2164" align="alignleft" width="175" caption="Photo credit: Russian Vogue"][/caption]

Supermodel Naomi Campbell is literally all over the April edition of Russian Vogue, which was totally dedicated to her. That's right - she was the only model featured in the edition, which she guest edited. She is featured in editorials shot by big name photogs Steven Meisel, Mario Testino, Tom Munro, Matt Irwin, and Solve Sundsbo.

Oh to be a supermodel with a billionaire Russian boyfriend...

    [caption id="attachment_2165" align="alignright" width="197" caption="Photo credit: Glamour magazine"][/caption]

Dominicana-boricua Zoe Saldana is also in the cover girl biz this month, as one of the three covers for Glamour magazine, which is touting her as part of the 'Glam New Guard'.

The accompanying interview is the usual succinct Zoe no-bullshit delight. A taste and more pics  of both islandistas (some NSFW!) from both magazines after the cut.
GLAMOUR: In past interviews, you’ve bristled on the topic of race. Why?

Says the woman who has insisted to the Dominican press "soy una mujer negra".
"Because ethnic is a word that doesn’t exist in my vocabulary. In Hollywood, you hear things like, “Oh, they loved you but they want to go more traditional.” That’s the new N word. So when [someone says] I look “dark,” I say, “Dark compared to whom? This is just my skin."

    Love. her.

Her other pic is pretty hot too.

    [caption id="attachment_2166" align="aligncenter" width="450" caption="Photo credit: Glamour magazine"][/caption]

... but of course, none is as hot as Miss Campbell. Her Vogue flicks include nudity, leather and a snake.

    [caption id="attachment_2167" align="aligncenter" width="450" caption="Photo credit: Solve Sundbro for Russian Vogue"][/caption]

    [caption id="attachment_2168" align="aligncenter" width="450" caption="Photo credit: Russian Vogue"][/caption]

Limo driver apologises to Naomi Campbell over attack allegations

Boy, all we could do is laugh when we read this one.

Somehow, the limo driver who was allegedly attacked by Naomi Campbell earlier this week, has ended up apologising to her.

The driver, Miodrag Mejdina, issued a statement through his lawyer which said:
"I got angry and overreacted. It was a misunderstanding and I regret involving the police. This whole thing has been blown out of proportion and I apologize to Ms. Campbell for causing that to happen."

So, basically he is apologising for being an informer? Naomi is a real don... a Dudus yu name?

Most folks are taking this apology with a lump of salt, since the driver happens to work for Naomi's billionaire Russian boyfriend, Vladimir Doronin.

When asked if his client had been paid off to drop the case, his lawyer Earl Ward, said:
"The statement speaks for itself. We have no further comment."

So ... take that as you will.

However, it didn't stop Naomi from issuing a pretty haughty statement which said:
"I have worked very hard on correcting my previous wrongdoings and I will not be held hostage to my past.... "I am pleased the driver has apologized. I would like to put the last few days behind me and move on."

    Oh Naomi ...

Islandista legal woes: Naomi and Keisha

    Oh Naomi, not again?

We're not saying you did it... after all your (beleaguered no doubt) lawyer has urged us all not to rush to judgement about the report that you assaulted a limo driver and then hightailed it out of the van like Usain Bolt in heels when he pulled out his phone ... to call the police (what, you thought it was for some ironic revenge?)

We're not saying you did it ... but it look a way, star.

According to the NY Daily News:
The driver claimed Campbell was brooding about an incident involving her boyfriend, married Russian billionaire Vladimir Doronin, sources said.

Mejdina had been hired a year ago to chauffeur Doronin, 49, around the city. Campbell apparently called Doronin at the time, but he did not answer his cell phone. She then rang Mejdina, who also didn't answer.

Still peeved about the year-old incident, Campbell accused Mejdina yesterday of covering for Doronin and then slapped him, sources said.

The driver pulled over at 58thSt. and Second Ave., where he flagged down a traffic agent to report the assault. Campbell jumped out and ran away.

And... now the NY police are looking for you, even though apparently the driver is pressing charges.

We're not saying you did it but... this is becoming a little repetitive. ent?

In other islandista legal news, former and founding Sugababe Keisha Buchanan is reportedly ready to sue the band known as the Sugababes, from which she was unceremoniously ousted last year.

Apparently, Keisha is asking them to either stop performing under the Sugababes name or to pay her a large one-off sum for rights to the name. A source told the UK's Sunday Mirror.
This is a landmark case and will send shockwaves through the industry," a source said. "The Sugababes are one of the most successful girlbands of all time, but if they are forced to change their name it would be absolutely disastrous for them.

"It would be very hard for them to maintain any credibility if they had no original band members and were called something else.

"Keisha was an integral member from the very beginning so it is easy to understand why she is acting like this. She even came up with the band's name with fellow founder member Mutya Buena and deserves something for making the Sugababes what they are today."

To quote Merital - My money, my money ha ha...

Islandistas on red carpets across the globe

Islandistas (and an islandisto) hit red carpets from London to Los Angeles last week. Fashion, film and music all collided as island folk graced red carpets for the Elle Style Awards in London, the NAACP Image Awards in Los Angeles and further down the fame totem pole, BET's Rip the Runway fashion show in New York City.

The Elle Style awards kicked things off with Naomi Campbell, Corinne Bailey Rae and Leona Lewis all attending. Check these and other pics.

Naomi brings out the stars for Fashion Relief for Haiti

    [caption id="attachment_2030" align="aligncenter" width="360" caption="Photo credit: Daily Mail"][/caption]

London Fashion Week just started yesterday and supermodel islandista Naomi Campbell started it off with her Fashion Relief for Haiti show.

Just like she did at the start of NYFW last week, she brought out all the stars for the show, including her fellow super and good mate Kate Moss, British Prime Minister's wife Sarah Brown and a ton of musical stars, including islandistas Alexandra Burke, Jamelia and soul queen Beverley Knight.

[caption id="attachment_2039" align="aligncenter" width="315" caption="Alexandra Burke danced and mugged with diminutive British comedian Ronnie Corbitt on the catwalk. (Photo credit: Daily Mail)"][/caption]

    [caption id="attachment_2031" align="aligncenter" width="214" caption="Jamelia walked with her two daughters."][/caption]

She even brought out her mum Valerie on the catwalk and we can see now where Naomi gets her genes! I could not believe that was the mother of a 30-something year old woman - she looked a-maaaz-ing! Naomi wasn't lying when she said her black don't crack! Check the photos of mum and more stars after the jump.

[caption id="attachment_2033" align="aligncenter" width="190" caption="Beverley Knight sang and walked the runway as well."][/caption]

[caption id="attachment_2040" align="aligncenter" width="214" caption=". Former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell was among the stars. (Photo credit: Zak Hussein/PA Wire)"][/caption]

[caption id="attachment_2035" align="aligncenter" width="196" caption="The legendary Dame Shirley Bassey supported the show as well by taking a turn on the 'walk."][/caption]

    [caption id="attachment_2036" align="aligncenter" width="239" caption="Naomi with her fabulous mum. Im-press-ive!"][/caption]

The show included a tribute to recently departed designer Alexander McQueen and Naomi, Kate and McQueen muse Annabelle modelled dresses from his SS 10 collection - one of which was auctioned off and bought by Top Shop king Sir Philip Green for £ 100, 000!

The whole event raised over £1 million so well done to Naomi!

Model behaviour: Naomi for Haiti, Jeneil's nude cover & more

    [caption id="attachment_1964" align="alignleft" width="250" caption="Photo credit: Vogue.co.uk"][/caption]

Islandista born and descended models have started 2010 as busy as they were in 2009.

The queen of them all, Brit-yaadie Naomi Campbell has been working hard at putting together her annual Fashion for Relief show, which will benefit Haiti this year.

She is teaming up with Sarah Brown, wife of British Prime Minister Gordon Brown for the show which will take place during London Fashion Week.

Thus far, Naomi has brought on fashion friends Dolce & Gabbana, Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood for the event which takes place on February 18th.

She was out and about this week doing interviews and photo calls for the event.

Say what you want about Naomi (and yes, there is nuff to say) but her heart is as big as her temper. She has always worked hard for charity causes.

In more islandista model news, fellow Jamaican models Jeneil Williams and Jaunel McKenzie are going hard for 2010 - already. More on their blazing start to 2010 when you read on.

Jaunel worked like a beast the week before Christmas 09, jetting to New York, Paris and London to shoot editorials coming out this month for four major publications - British Marie Claire, French Glamour and American Cosmo and Red.

Whew! Talk about 'you better work!' The girl ent playing.

Two of the shoots were actually Caribbean collabos, with the Glamour editorial shot by Jamaican photog Walter Chin and the Cosmo one done by Haitian Marc Baptiste.

And Jeneil is taking it all off for the hotly anticipated cover of LOVE magazine, the edgy fashion pub from the Conde Nast stable. The picture is one of at least four cover shots that have been leaked with Lara Stone, Daria Werbowy and Kristen McMenamy covering others in the same pose - however, LOVE is fond of going with multiple covers.

Not to mention that folks at top model blog, models.com are going crazy over the pic and Jeneil's strong, sensual shot.

I read some saying that her pose was not giving off as much strength as her face but I disagree. I think the pose is strong and her expression is giving it a touch of vulnerability. That's just me.

It's a big cover though - love the 'Fashion Icons' stamp on it - go deh Jeneil!

[caption id="attachment_1965" align="aligncenter" width="405" caption="Photo credit: Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott for LOVE Magazine"][/caption]

And in a final islandista model tidbit, word in the blogosphere is that our girl Jourdan Dunn is set to make her comeback soon and will be doing it big.

    According to The Imagist:
Jourdan Dunn lovers, unite in celebration...a mere few weeks after giving birth London's loveliest is back in the editorial mix BIG-time. Think Blue Chip Only Girl A + bookings back to back...

We can't wait! Bring on LFW!

Islandista cover girls - Naomi and Zoe

Two very different islandistas are covering the latest editions of two very different magazines.

The amazonian and fiery Jamaican-Brit Naomi Campbell is on the Fall/Winter 09 cover of Flaunt magazine in a vivid, colour-drenched and dramatic shoot by star photog David LaChapelle entitled 'The Rape of Africa'.

    [caption id="attachment_1871" align="aligncenter" width="450" caption="photo credit: David LaChapelle/Flaunt Magazine"][/caption]

Some folk are pissy that you can see her nipple ... like we haven't all seen a nipple before. *roll eyes*

On the flip side, the pixie-like sci-fi heroine Domican Zoe Saldana is featured in a futuristic, stark spread in Complex magazine that features mostly black white and silver as its colour theme.

Check a few of the pics below.

Naomi Campbell to get modelling reality show?

    [caption id="attachment_1825" align="alignleft" width="147" caption="Photo credit: Marcio Madeira/style.com"][/caption]

Why didn't anyone think of this before?!

Vogue UK is reporting that Naomi Campbell is "set to become the UK's answer to Tyra Banks"  as talks are in the works for her to host her own modelling reality show.

    According to Vogue:
"The proposed show would see Campbell take on a group of budding young models, offering them advice and criticism and whittling them down to a winner."

We say to this... hell, yeah!

Naomi Campbell + reality show = ratings gold as far as we're concerned. Can you just imagine it?

Think of all the cat fights and bitching you get on Top Model and oh... just about any semi-competitive reality show. Then throw Naomi's legendary temper in the mix. I would love, love to see some of these stroppy, egotistical chicks that are on the reality shows get into it with Naomi - yes please!

Her spokesperson told the Daily Mail:
"Naomi has been approached with an offer, which we are talking about and discussing. An initial approach has been made. We are discussing that offer, but nothing is set in stone yet."

Why not? What are you people waiting for?

Islandistas at the Met Costume Institute Ball ... at last!

Shame on us - look how long we promised to bring you our take on the Met Costume Institute Ball and we're only now getting to it!

Trust, it has been a hectic week islandista-wise and other stories kept pushing our Met review further and further back.

So now, without further ado, here are some of the islandistas who graced (or in Naomi's case, was supposed to grace) the Met's Costume Institute Ball.

Met - Rosario Dawson - DVF- getty

Rosario Dawson was as gorgeous and on point as ever in her coral column gown. I feel like she could have gone a little more high fashion though - the dress was pretty but it was not a standout on a night like that.

    Met- Arlenis

Model Arlenis Sosa was in an Alberta Ferretti dress with black booties. Maybe it's the picture, but this dress is not doing for me on Arlenis. You can barely notice the beautiful thread-like material of the dress and it just looks a bit shapeless on her.

     Met- Jourdan Dunn

One of our our favourite islandista models out there, Jourdan Dunn was fab in a gun-metal grey gown.

    Naomia post costume institute gala

And Naomi Campbell did not actually show up to the Met Costume Institute Ball. There was a bit of a kerfuffle when her designer and long time friend Azzedine Alaia pulled the seven dresses he had made for the gala, after finding out that his work was not going to be in the exhibition. Alaia had made dresses for seven models including Naomi's fellow 'supers' Linda Evangelista and Stephanie Seymour. Campbell's spokesperson said:
As Naomi has been the muse of Azzedine Alaïa for 23 years, she feels she doesn’t want to attend unless she can represent his work.

However, Alaia did have a post-ball party and Naomi wore this aqua Alaia mini. We are ... not too certain about this dress. It fits beautifully and the colour is great but it reminds us of a mermaid. A very hot, statuesque, fierce mermaid, no doubt but it is still making us hum 'Disney's Under De Sea' very softly.

    Everything's better, everything's wetter...

    Under de Sea!

Fashion season analysis: more colourful?

So New York and London's Fashion Weeks have whizzed by in the last fortnight or so and Milan and Paris are still to come.

The question, especially relevant to us islandistas is - has there been more colour on the runways? Have we been seeing women like ourselves (well, not really like ourselves because the average islandista is not 6 feet tall but you get our point) reflected?

The fashion industry has been taking some licks over the last year or so over its lack of diversity with women such as Naomi Campbell (one of our favourite islandistas, even though she's crazy scary), Bethann Hardison and Iman speaking out. The industry responded, tetchily and defensively at first but then with a few efforts, most notably the Italian Vogue all-black special which set the fashion industry alight.

So, has this all had any impact at all where it matters - on the runways and in the magazine pages? For New York's Fashion Week, blog Shophound maintained a Diversity Quotient which they included at the end of every review. They also did a full report, listing the DQ for all of the shows  they attended.

So what did it show? Well, things have gotten marginally better at least. Instead of just the token one black model (or none at all) designers have been making the effort to include two or three per show. Prominent black designer Tracy Reese led their stats, with 36% of her models being non-white. John Bartlett was close behind with 30% diversity. Brian Reyes followed with 27% and Ports 1961 and Ruben Singer both had 25%. At the other end of the scale, Jil Stuart had a measly 6.4% diversity quotient.

According to Reuters, Diane von Furstenburg, who as head of the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) had urged designers to consider more diversity for their shows this season, also featured a number of black models as did DKNY. There was even a  young black albino model, 17 year old Shaun Ross, who was featured in the Patrick Ervell show.

Still many shows only featured one or no models of colour. And things were even more woeful for Asian and sub-continental Asian models. In fact, Shophound reported that Lakshmi Menon was the only South Asian model featured. And we know islandistas come in all colours so this still does not augur very well.

    Designer Michael Angel claimed:

"I don't ever think about color, nor do I think of race. That is the most backward way to think."

Hmm. Funny. His DQ was a measly 6%. Which actually represented a whopping one black model out of 19- Anabela, who modeled 3 out of 44 looks. Hmm. I guess he's trying hard not to be too 'backward'.

Anyhow, things are changing slowly or rather we should say moving slowly because truthfully it is still too early in the game to know if this represents a real shift or if it is just a temporary response to the blacklash of the last year. They say black never goes out of style but in fashion that has just not been the case.

Islandista catwalker, the Dominican (Republic) model Arlenis Sosa, armed with her brand new Lancome contract, got quite a bit of attention, as did Sesilee Lopez. Both were featured in the all-black issue of Vogue. Sosa actually made her fashion week debut in NYC and walked for some pretty big names such as Oscar de la Renta, Donna Karan, Carolina Herrera, Proenza Schouler, Zac Posen, Narciso Rodriguez and Tommy Hilfiger. So that Italian Vogue issue is already starting to do its work.

Naomi sees a change. She says she is encouraged enough by the black representation on the catwalks that she is considering bowing out of the business. In an interview with the Times of London, she commented:

"This time they [designers and editors] have stepped it up. I feel positive. That means that I can go soon."

Really, it remains to be seen. I think we all  - bloggers, consumers, models, designers and so on, need to continue holding their feet to the fire.

    So let's do that.

The lovely ladies of Lewis Hamilton

Ever since hot Formula One racer and part-Grenadian islandisto Lewis Hamilton broke up with his long-time girlfriend a year ago he has been seen out with a slew of gorgeous women - as well we would expect from a young man who has ... well, everything! Good looks, tons of money (apparently made 10 million GBP last year), an exploding career, good looks...

Interestingly enough, Lewis is quite close to his Grenadian family and visits the island often to see his grandfather who returned to his native island after moving to Britain in the 1950s like many other West Indians. Perhaps this close connection to the islands influenced his choice of partner as he has been seen out with various islandistas.

First he turned heads with Miss Grenada World 2007, Vivian Burkhardt who accompanied him to no less an event than the premiere of Indiana Jones at the Cannes Film Festival last month. Burkhardt is a student at St. Georges University in Grenada.

He was also seen out and about with our favourite "brings a whole new meaning to fierce" supermodel islandista Naomi a few months ago and caught up with her again recently at Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday party in London a few days ago.

The most recent woman on his arm though, has been Pussycat Dolls lead singer (and Pacific Ocean islandista) Nicole Scherzinger who was the one who actually accompanied him to Mandela's birthday do.

It would have been nice though if she actually wore a whole shirt to a dignified event honouring the 90th birthday of a living legend ... a little broughtupcy would be nice... I think he should have stuck to Miss Grenada whose Cannes outfit was great. As people say in cricket, class is class, form is only temporary!

Islandistas in Italian Vogue's all-black issue

So every fashionista worth a damn has been buzzing about Italian Vogue's all-black issue which came out this week.

We all know how hard it is to find women of colour in the fashion industry - whether on the runways or in the editorials. And there has been a lot of debate and hand-wringing about it in recent times. Everyone agrees it's terrible but no-one quite seems to know where to point the finger... perhaps because they are trying to make sure it's not aimed at them. Is it the editors? Is it the designers? Is it the advertisers? Is it the readers?

Anyhow, Italian Vogue editor Franca Sozzani and photographer Steven Meisel got together and decided now was the perfect time to make a real statement about this. Sozanni was fascinated by the candidacy of Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama (can we claim him as an islandisto since he was born in Hawaii? :) I mean it's not the Caribbean but still...) and Meisel had long been frustrated with running up against brick walls when he would push black models for shoots.

So they did the damn thing with several islandistas making the cut. Naomi Campbell (of Jamaican parentage) of course led the charge, as one of four models on the fold-out front cover. Fellow Brit and suspected islandista by extraction (I am so sure this girl is of Caribbean parentage or grand parentage - black, British, with an Anglo last name? Sounds like a West Indian to me but being that she's relatively new on the scene I have not found any confirmation as yet) Jourdan Dunn is also featured on the cover.

Jamaican model Jeneil Williams (of Caribbean fashion powerhouse Pulse) is on the inside.

Personally, I think the editors of American, British and French Vogue in particular should HANG THEIR HEADS in shame that the editor of Italian Vogue beat them to this. After all, Italy has a black population of less than 1% whereas the USA, the UK and France all have significant black populations. Why should Italian Vogue have been the first one to confront this ugly issue when these editions all have much larger black populations?

Oh Naomi...

    Oh Naomi ... sigh.

Why black women just won't leave weave alone, nuh?

It is bad enough that you have pleaded guilty yet again to pelting hand (and apparently foot and spit too for good measure) in someone. As an islandista-by-extraction you are making it bad for us and let us not even start to talk about how you live down to the 'violent yardies' stereotype. I swear you were a garrison don in another life.

But this here hair is truly a crime Ms. Campbell. It nuh mek it.

What have all the years of weave done to your hairline? It seems like it has picked up, packed up and abandoned you. It is truly painful to see.

Truth be told - I never got the appeal of weave, even before I went natural and grew dreads. I used to love me some braids, but weave on the other hand seemed a step too far - like you were trying to make out that this was your real hair.  Hence all the destructive extra effort at bonding and blending it into one's own hair - the glue, the stitching etc.  Before anyone asks ... I saw braids kind of like make-up - obviously not real and obviously there for adornment. I don't think someone could anymore mistake my old school 'Patra' braids for being my real hair than they could think my lips are fire-engine red.

Weave on the other hand ...hm! Not only did it seem phony but it seemed to damage hair so much more quickly.

My grouse with so many of us sisters (not just islandistas - black women the world over are guilty of this) is that so often the weave looks patently, painfully fake and 'weavy'. Even famous women who could and should be able to afford better seem to fall into this trap. Beyonce, raise yuh hand ... you too Serena!

Let's not even get into the chicks on the street who have a set of gel and black dye down their foreheads so as to help the big, thick weave track in the middle of their head 'blend' in better. Really ... why? It just doesn't look cute.

But back to the world's baddest (in so many ways) black supermodel and her dearly departed hairline - also known as traction alopecia. I find this is so common among islandistas and other sisters and not just older women who have had a lifetime of mashing up their hair. I see young women, girls in secondary school, whose hairlines are crying out to 'give us us free' from the abuse.

And truth be told, there are a lot of wild, untrained people running about the place calling themselves hairdressers. Women who will yank your hair so hard that the roots will be popping up around the edges (that actually happened to me once - not me and she again!) and who will fry and dye your hair into oblivion even as there are fewer and fewer scraps to torture. Even us naturalistas cannot escape. I see plenty people with locks whose hairlines are receding from locticians who put too much pressure on it when palm-rolling it or who interloc it too tight - and it happens to men and women. I talk about Naomi but has anyone noticed the horror that is Beenie Man's hairline? No? Take a look ...

But a true that patch could be male pattern baldness or maybe D'Angel pull out some locks in a fight or something ...

Anyhow, it is not  a cute look. Hopefully Naomi can still do something about it. She certainly has enough money to consult with a quality trichologist and save her scalp.

And if any of you islandistas out there are suffering ... check out one of the trained professionals from the Caribbean Association of Professional Trichologists (CAPT). Founded in Barbados in 2001 by Guyanese-born Carole Williams, there are members all over the region. No official website but here are some links to guide you in the way you should go.
