Former Warrant singer Jani Lane was found dead last night (Thursday) at the Comfort Inn hotel in the Los Angeles suburb of Woodland Hills. While the cause of death is not know, the 47-year old had a history of drug and alcohol addiction.
Born John Kennedy Oswald on February 1st, 1964 in Akron, Ohio, he was the youngest of five children. He started playing drums at four, later going by the name Mitch Dynomite when he started playing in clubs at 11. He was a star athlete in high school and was offered football scholarships at various colleges. He opted not to go to college and instead found himself in and out of quite a few bands, taking the stage name Jani Lane in the mid '80s just before joining Warrant. He chose the name because his German grandparents would pronounce and spell his real name, Johnny, as Jani [prn: Yay-nee].
Lane left Warrant in 1993, rejoined in 1994, quit again in 2004 and was back in 2008, but that only lasted six months. Their hits include "Cherry Pie," "Heaven," "Down Boys," "Sometimes She Cries," "I Saw Red" and "Uncle Tom's Cabin"
Last year Lane pled no contest to DUI stemming from his arrest two months earlier -- and was ordered to serve 120 days in jail. He also had his license revoked for three years and had to complete a 30-month alcohol-education program. Speaking about his battles he said, "I've suffered some consequences from drinking that I've never suffered in my entire life. It's really made me take a step back and go, 'Is this how you want to continue? Is this how you want to finish up?' The answer is no."
In addition to a few solo recordings and collaborations, Lane appeared on VH1's Celebrity Fit Club 2 in 2005 and toured with Great White last summer, filling in for Jack Russell who was recuperating from surgery. He taped an appearance on VH1 Classic's That Metal Show last month that's expected to air on October 1st.
    He leaves behind a daughter.
Reaction to his death already made its way onto the Internet with Glenn Hughes saying, "Rest in peace Jani Lane... another one lost."
Michael Sweet of Stryper, who was with Lane for the taping of That Metal Show, says, "My heart, thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Jani Lane... He was a great guy."
